New Campus
Arkansas State University Heber Springs
Heber Springs, Arkansas
The master plan for this 500 student, two-year college is conceived as a linear configuration of two to three story buildings tucked into the north base of Sugarloaf Mountian. This arrangement addresses the objective of visually highlighting the campus while respecting the significance and presence of the mountain. Following the natural "organic" path of the mountain's footprint, the campus responds to and acknowledges the significance of the natural site feature.
The strength of the concept lies in the relationship between the car, the student and the mountain. The solution is layered so that the linear campus becomes the visual and physical barrier between the convenient, first time arrival parking and the experience of the campus "commons" - an exterior, linear promenade running along elevation 320 connecting the buildings. This design encourages a campus experience removed from asphalt and automobile and focused upon the campus and its unique natural setting beneath Sugarloaf Mountain.
